As a result of post-war population movements, the region's population has been redistributed and concentrated in large cities. Despite frequent flash floods, the region is facing water scarcity due to increasing water demand and climate change.

One of the objectives of the project was to identify new groundwater resource, taking into account the problems caused by climate change. According to the needs of the population, the expansion of the current waterworks in these areas could be realised in the near future.

During the research, we identified areas where small hydropower plants can be developed and proposed exact construction sites. We also aimed to suggest flood risk management methods and sustainable rainwater management options.

The project was fully supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of Tuzla Canton and the City of Lukavac. An important element of the project was knowledge transfer and expert advice: A common objective with the Bosnian partner was to ensure that the resulting study was technically useful and provided the basis for a future reference work in the region.

The project was carried out in the following phases 1) Acquisition of archival data on the area (hydrogeological data, well and spring data, meteorological data, maps) 2) Acquisition of reference books, journals, studies, publications on the area 3) Construction and continuous updating of the GIS geographical information database 4) Field surveys, field preparation, hydrological and hydrogeological studies 5) Field geophysical survey 6) Accredited in-situ and laboratory water tests 7) Hydrogeological modelling 8) Hydrological modelling 9) Identification of new potential water resources 10) Identification of micro-hydropower plants 11) Flash flood risk assessment, development of sustainable stormwater management methodology 12) Professional hydrogeological and flood protection trainings, consultations, workshops 13) Development of strategy document.
